Taika Waititi is sharing a disappointing update about his long-planned Star Wars movie.
The 51-year-old filmmaker confirms that his project, which was first announced in 2020, is being put on hold while he focuses on other movies.
Speaking to Inverse while promoting his new movie Klara and the Sun, Taika revealed that he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are moving on to a different project together.
What Did Taika Waititi Say About His Star Wars Movie?
“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together,” Taika told the outlet.
When asked for more details about the new project, Taika checked with his publicist, who indicated he could not share anything else.
“Well, there’s your answer,” he said. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague.”
The director also made it clear that he has several other projects keeping him busy.
“It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do,” he said.
However, Taika did not completely rule out returning to Star Wars in the future.
“Ice ages do come to an end,” he added. “Who knows?”
Is Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie Canceled?
The movie is on hold, but it has not been officially announced as permanently canceled.
Taika was first announced as the writer and director of a new Star Wars movie in May 2020. He was originally developing the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, before Tony became involved in the writing process.
Earlier this year, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said the movie was still in development and praised a script Taika had submitted.
In January, Taika also shared his hopes for the movie and explained how he wanted to bring back the fun of the original Star Wars films.
The filmmaker has already worked in the Star Wars universe, directing an episode of The Mandalorian and voicing the droid IG-11.
His next movie, Klara and the Sun, stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams and is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday (October 23).
For now, there’s no word on when or if Taika‘s Star Wars movie will move forward.
