Some new details about The Hunt for Ben Solo have emerged.

It was just recently revealed that Steven Soderbergh planned to make a Star Wars movie with Adam Driver, titled The Hunt for Solo, for Lucasfilm and Disney. The script for the movie, which was set after The Rise of Skywalker, was finished; however, Disney ultimately decided not to go forward with the project. One of the previously reported reasons for this decision was that Disney’s Bob Iger didn’t see how Ben could have survived the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

What is the new update on The Hunt for Ben Solo?

According to The Playlist, however, the reasons for the movie’s cancellation may be a bit more complicated than that.

“Internally, that reaction surprised Lucasfilm leadership, who reportedly felt the story’s logic was clear and creatively sound. Several people close to the production interpret the decision as politically motivated, coinciding with Iger’s efforts to position Bergman as his successor at Disney,” the article reads. “The fallout from that decision appears to have extended beyond the project itself. Bergman’s handling of several high-profile initiatives has been criticized internally, and his standing within Disney’s succession plan has reportedly weakened. Other executives, including Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden, are now viewed as stronger contenders for the top job.”

Additionally, The Playlist reports that Scott Z. Burns was paid more than any screenwriter in Lucasfilm history to complete the screenplay to The Hunt for Ben Solo. Amid the fallout, Soderbergh and Driver were never compensated for their work on the movie, while “Burns reportedly received a low but substantial seven-figure sum.”

Since all of this has come to light, many Star Wars fans have campaigned for The Hunt for Solo to revive plans to make this movie. At this time, there’s been no announcement from Disney or Lucasfilm about the matter.
