Kyle MacLachlan almost played one of television’s most famous doctors!

The 67-year-old Twin Peaks and Sex & The City actor is revealing that he auditioned to play Dr. Derek Shepherd, better known as McDreamy, on Grey’s Anatomy.

The role eventually went to Patrick Dempsey, but Kyle says he understands why he wasn’t the right fit.

In his new memoir, Fictional Selves, Kyle looks back at his audition and explains what he thought was missing from his performance.

Why Didn’t Kyle MacLachlan Get the Role of McDreamy?

Kyle revealed that he auditioned for the ABC medical drama in 2004, before the show premiered the following year.

The actor felt comfortable with the character of Derek Shepherd, but wasn’t sure he could pull off the romantic side of the role.

Although Kyle thought his audition went well, he believed the show’s casting team was looking for someone with a different kind of appeal.

“Something dreamier. And that’s just never been in my comfort zone,” he wrote in his memoir, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Kyle explained that he has never felt especially comfortable portraying a traditional romantic leading man.

He also joked about his career taking a different direction.

“We can’t all be the dreamy type. But the friendly new neighbor who maybe murdered his wife? Yep, that’s me,” he wrote, referring to his Desperate Housewives role.

What Happened After Kyle MacLachlan’s Grey’s Anatomy Audition?

Patrick ultimately landed the role of Derek Shepherd, playing the character opposite Ellen Pompeo‘s Meredith Grey.

He became one of the show’s biggest stars and remained a series regular through Season 11, although he later returned for special appearances.

Kyle went on to join Desperate Housewives in 2006 as Orson Hodge, the mysterious new love interest of Marcia Cross‘ character Bree Van de Kamp.

In his memoir, Kyle explained that he felt more comfortable playing complicated characters like Orson than someone known for being a heartthrob.

The revelation comes as Grey’s Anatomy prepares to return for Season 23 on Thursday (October 15).
