John Erwin Passes Away, He-Man Voice Actor Was 88

John Erwin has passed away. The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe voice actor was 88.

Erwin died “around Dec. 20” due to natural causes in his home in Camarillo, California, according to his reps at the PR firm Celeborx.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Erwin was born on December 5, 1936, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He started his career in entertainment playing various in the television series Citizen Soldier.

Erwin then joined the cast of Rawhide, a western series that co-starred Clint Eastwood, in 1959. About a decade later, Errwin began voicing Morris the Cat in various television commercials.

He began voicing Reggie on The Archie Show in 1968. He continued to voice that character in a number of other related series as well, including Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Archie’s TV Funnies, The U.S. of Archie, The New Archie and Sabrina Hour, and more.

He began voicing the titular character of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983. He continued to play the character in the She-Ra: Princess of Power series, while he also voiced Beast Man and a number of other characters in various He-Man projects.

“Working with John Erwin was a ballad of irreverence, professionalism, and surprise,” Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced Skeletor on He-Man, said in a statement. “He was a series actor, writer, performer of commercials, musician, painter, and an all-around lovely gentleman, an indelible addition to my life.”

Melendy Britt, the voice of She-Ra in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, added, “For 40 years, John Erwin was not only my brother onscreen, he was my friend.”

Erwin’s filmography includes 1960’s 13 Fighting Men, 1981’s Looker, 1986’s He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, 1986’s Skeletor’s Revenge, 1988’s Everybody’s All-American, 1989’s Back to the Future Part II, and 1995’s Babe.
