▪️ King's Court is one of many games my brother and I played in our youth, so this story caught my eye.

Designer Peggy Brown worked on the production of the game in the 1980s, and in early February 2025 she was able to get a replacement copy of King's Court into the hands of people who lost theirs in the January 2025 Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County. Here's an excerpt:
King's Court was the very first game I ever worked on. I sculpted the play pieces out of modeling clay, did their part drawings by hand, and worked with the people at the factory to disable the mixing screw on the supply hopper of the injection molding equipment to make the colors of the play pieces swirly like marble instead of solid colors.

The guys running the press made sure I knew they thought I was a pain in the neck. But the play pieces turned out great and I was so proud that when the game was released, my friends and I took pictures in the aisle at Toys R Us. And that was way before everybody had a camera in their pocket all the time. The store manager thought we were weirdos or spies and kicked us out.

▪️ Speaking of being kicked out, on Kotaku Zack Zwiezen detailed how an incorrect call by a judge in a Disney Lorcana tournament in Australia allowed someone to win "in the crappiest way possible", costing their opponent a rare gold Mickey Mouse card valued between $10,000 and $20,000. An excerpt:
In the third and final round of the match, [Jesse] Lentini "quested" with a magic broom card, gaining a point towards victory. Then he played Goat Merlin, a card that grants you a victory point for simply playing it. And then he went to banish his broom card to his discard pile because that card has an ability that lets you destroy it when you play another character and you then draw a card. That's when his opponent, [Clément] Fusade, complained and asked for a judge to step in.

Fusade's argument was that Lentini had missed his chance to trigger the broom's ability when he grabbed Goat Merlin's point and moved on. If you've played Lorcana even casually you'll know that is, uh, bullshit.

Thankfully the story has a happy ending of sorts.

▪️ On February 19, 2025, Laura Kate Dale and Cari Watterton launched Abletop, a six-episode video series that discusses boardgame and tabletop accessibility, covering topics such as rulebooks, mobility and dexterity, visual accessibility, cognitive load, and communication. A new video will be released weekly on Wednesdays.

▪️ Publisher Atlas Games has launched a sprue-recycling program that allows local retail partners to collect plastic sprues and unpainted miniatures from customers for recycling into its Replay Workshop line of recycled game accessories.

[url=This page lists participating retailers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Other retailers — and presumably individuals — can ship these materials to Atlas Games for recycling, but you'll have to cover shipping costs yourself.

▪️ When BGG launched The BoardGameGeek Hall of Fame in January 2025, we published a video to highlight each of the 25 games included in the HoF's opening class.

Candice Harris oversaw the production of these videos, which focused on the games themselves, but she also invited others to share memorable stories related to these games, and she's now assembled stories from a few of the contributors to the HoF video series. Says Harris, "If you have a story of your own, we'd love to hear them, and we welcome you to post comments or YouTube shorts with #gamingmemories if you're interested in sharing them."
