Xolo Maridueña is opening up about getting the call to return as Blue Beetle!

The 25-year-old actor first played the DC Comics superhero in the 2023 movie, Blue Beetle, and he’s set to reprise the role in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

While attending the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Practical Magic 2, Xolo shared how he wasn’t sure if he would ever get to play the superhero again and recalled getting a call from James Gunn.

“There’s never a guarantee with anything, bro,” Xolo told Variety‘s Marc Malkin on the red carpet. “I mean, you know this, stuff flips on a dime, and I know that it’s not always like a merit-based system. So, there’s so much that’s out of my control, but I am just the most humbled of James and the greater DC team for folding us in, Indiana Jones style.”

Xolo then reveals he was on a trip to Japan with friends when James Gunn called him up to reprise the role.

“I was in Japan with my friends; nobody knew anything,” he recalled. “And I just see, like the Bat-phone, my phone rings [and it’s] James Gunn. All my friends look at me, and I had to leave the room. I came back, and I was like, ‘Off the record, don’t tell anyone, but we’re coming back,’ and I’m so excited for people to see where Blue Beetle ends up.”

When asked what it was like to put the suit back on, Xolo played coy and teased, “I’m sure it’ll be great when that happens.”

Last week, James revealed that principal photography on Man of Tomorrow has wrapped, meaning Xolo has likely already filmed his scenes. Obviously, though, he cannot disclose any details about his character’s return.
