Oscars 2025: Lena Waithe, Ethan Slater, React to Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande Wicked Performance

The 2025 Oscars are wickedly historic.

After Wicked’s Paul Tazewell won the trophy for Best Costume Design during the 97th Academy Awards—hosted by Conan O’Brien March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles—he shared the significance of the moment.

“I'm the first Black man to receive the costume design award for my work on Wicked,” he shared from stage, to which the audience stood and erupted in applause. “I’m so proud of this.”

The 60-year-old—who was nominated alongside A Complete Unknown’s Arianne Phillips, Conclave’s Lisy Christy, Gladiator II’s Janty Yates and Nosferatu’s Linda Muir—added, “This is absolutely astounding. Thank you, Academy for this very significant honor. I’m so proud of this.” (Click here to see the full list of 2025 Oscar winners.)

Tazewell—who was previously nominated for his work on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story—also took a moment to shout out the movie’s stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both of whom are also nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

“My Ozian muses, Cynthia and Ariana, I love you so much,” he continued. “All the other cast, thank you. Thank you for trusting me with bringing your characters to life. This is everything. Thank you.”

Before his historic win, Tazewell was praised by Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang, who presented the award to him, albeit with some humor.

“To be costumed by the great Paul Tazewell is one of the biggest honors of my alleged career,” Bowen said. “Paul, I'm actually upset with you, because I can't talk about your exquisite work without sounding like a total jackass. I don't want to be the kind of person who says, “Elphaba's costuming tells a story,” but I have to, because it does, because of you, you legend.”

He also quipped, “If I have to say the words sumptuous fabrics one more time in an interview, I'm going to defy gravity off the side of this stage.”

And in the final words before announcing Tazewell as the winner, Bowen sweetly concluded, “Paul, how very dare you for being such a one of a kind talent. I love you so much.”
