Eric Kripke explains why Soldier Boy wasn’t in The Boys Season 5 finale
Eric Kripke confirmed to ScreenRant that Soldier Boy’s absence from The Boys series finale was intentional. The showrunner revealed that Vought Rising will address key mysteries surrounding the character’s fate. Homelander put Soldier Boy back into cryosleep in Season 5, Episode 7. He then never appeared in the final episode of the series.
Kripke acknowledged that viewers might find the decision confusing at this stage. However, he stressed that the upcoming spinoff will provide clarity. “We’re deep into Vought Rising and we know what that story is,” Kripke said. “We know where that goes; a lot will make sense that might not make sense to the viewers at this exact moment, but hang in there, it all will,” he added. The creator also noted that the finale needed to prioritize the core cast’s storylines.
The showrunner further explained that Soldier Boy’s arc within Season 5 had reached its natural endpoint. “I think we told his story that we wanted to tell in this season,” Kripke added. He described the finale’s tight focus as a deliberate creative choice. “Part of the job of the season was wrapping up other people’s supporting players’ stories, so that on that final episode, we could really focus on the main characters,” he stated.
Soldier Boy played a pivotal role throughout Season 5 after Homelander awakened him in Episode 2. His presence led to the discovery that V-One recipients were immune to the Supe virus. That revelation shaped the rest of the season’s central conflict. Despite growing closer to Homelander, Soldier Boy never viewed his son as an equal. This dynamic ultimately resulted in Homelander putting him back to sleep.
Jensen Ackles will reprise his role as Soldier Boy in Vought Rising. The spinoff is set in the 1950s and follows a murder mystery format. Aya Cash returns as Stormfront alongside new cast members.
It is expected to arrive on Prime Video next year.
