Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s (RFK) raspy sound has drawn attention, especially during his recent public appearances. While many have noticed this unique quality, the cause behind it is a medical condition known as spasmodic dysphonia.

In this article, we’ll explore what spasmodic dysphonia is and how it affects Kennedy’s voice.

Why does RFK Jr. sound like that?

RFK Jr.’s voice, which many might have noticed over the years, has a distinctive and raspy quality that has sparked curiosity. The cause of this unique sound is spasmodic dysphonia, a rare neurological condition that causes involuntary spasms in the muscles responsible for controlling the vocal cords. This results in a voice that can sound hoarse, shaky, and sometimes difficult to understand.

Kennedy, who has lived with this condition for years, has openly discussed the challenges it presents. In a 2023 NewsNation interview, he explained that his voice was once strong and clear, but at age 46, he began to experience changes. At first, he didn’t know what was causing the issues, but people started suggesting that he might have spasmodic dysphonia. Kennedy said, “I had a very, very strong voice until I was 46 years old. It was unusually strong … It makes my voice tremble. At the time, I didn’t know what was wrong with it.” He was officially diagnosed in 1996.

In a 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kennedy Jr. admitted that he dislikes the sound of his voice and even feels sympathy for those who have to listen to it. He said, “My voice doesn’t really get tired. It just sounds terrible.” Despite this, he explained that the issue is neurological, and using his voice actually helps to strengthen it. He added that while he wishes his voice sounded better, he has learned to live with the condition.
