Oscars 2025: Whoopi Goldberg’s ‘Sister Act 3’ Update Will Make You Say Hallelujah

Whoopi Goldberg is answering your prayers and giving an update on Sister Act 3.

Both actresses appeared in the original 1992 movie Sister Act—in which Whoopi plays Vegas singer Deloris Van Cartier who hides out in a convent run by Maggie’s character Mother Superior and turns a struggling choir into a successful group performing beloved hits—as well as in the 1993 sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

While The View host originally announced in 2020 that a third Sister Act movie was being made, she noted they had to make some changes after the Downton Abbey star died at the age of 89 in September 2024.

“We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith,” Whoopi told Jimmy Fallon on a November episode of The Tonight Show. “We will get it done. They’ll get it done. It just is a shift.”

While Whoopi is attending the 97th Academy Awards as a presenter this year, she won an Oscar back in 1991 for her supporting role in Ghost (keep up with this year’s winners here). She then went on to host the award shows four times.

“My favorite memory is Billy Crystal being wheeled out as Hannibal Lecter,” Whoopi—dressed in a Christian Siriano gown—said on Live From E!: The Oscars. “I’m sorry, for me, that’s the epitome.”

Conan O’Brien is hosting the 2025 Oscars, which air live on ABC and Hulu March 2 starting at 7 p.m. EST. For now, keep reading to see more of the star-studded attendees.
