Curious about Bill Chisholm, the new owner of the Boston Celtics? With the franchise selling for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, many are looking into the man leading the historic deal. Chisholm’s background, business ventures, and deep ties to the Celtics are now in the spotlight.

Here’s a breakdown of the key facts and developments surrounding Bill Chisholm and his role as the Celtics’ new owner.

Everything to know about Bill Chisholm, new owner of Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have been sold for a record $6.1 billion to an investment group led by William “Bill” Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group.

This marks the highest sale price for a North American sports franchise, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the Washington Commanders. Chisholm, who grew up in Georgetown, Massachusetts, is a self-described “die-hard Celtics fan” with what the Boston Globe described as an “encyclopedic knowledge” of the team. (via Yahoo Sports)

Chisholm earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where he also played soccer, and later received his MBA with distinction from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently lives on Nantucket and plans to buy property in Boston. Chisholm co-founded Symphony Technology Group in 2002, a private equity firm managing software, data, and analytics companies, with assets reportedly totaling over $10 billion as of March 2023. Before founding STG, Chisholm co-founded the Valent Group. He also worked at Bain & Company and held roles at PaineWebber and other financial firms. He currently serves on the boards of Dodge Data, Cadmium, and CAI Software. His group will become the 15th ownership group in Celtics history.

Chisholm leads the group but shares ownership with other investors. Rob Hale, CEO of Granite Telecommunications, also joined the bid. Hale currently holds a minority stake in the Celtics and has a net worth of $5.8 billion, according to Forbes. The NBA’s Board of Governors still needs to approve the sale.

Once approved, Chisholm will become the new owner. Wyc Grousbeck will stay on as CEO and governor through the 2027–28 season. After that, he will continue with the team as a partner.
