Whalefall is getting off to a slow start at the box office.

The survival thriller starring Austin Abrams is opening with an estimated $7.3 million domestically and $17 million worldwide, according to TheWrap‘s Sunday (October 18) report.

The 20th Century Studios release arrived in U.S. theaters on Friday (October 16).

The movie currently has a 71% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 81% audience score.

What Is Whalefall About?

Austin plays Jay Gardiner, a young diver who searches for his late father’s remains off California’s central coast.

His trip becomes a fight for survival when a sperm whale swallows him. Trapped with a limited oxygen supply, Jay draws on lessons from his father as he tries to escape.

Josh Brolin plays his father, Mitt. Brian Duffield directs the adaptation of Daniel Kraus‘ novel and shares screenplay credit with the author.
