Melissa McCarthy Turned Down Designer Demands

When Melissa McCarthy approached a number of top designers to dress her for the Oscars, they said no. She couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for her. She asked five or six designers – very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people – and they all said no. This wasn’t about sample sizes either, since custom gowns are standard for such events.

When these designers said no to dressing McCarthy, they were ultimately saying no to her body, and to bodies like hers. The fact that Melissa McCarthy, a movie star, has difficulty finding nice clothes that fit says a lot about how fat women are perceived and treated in the fashion world. Instead of conforming to their narrow vision, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Her Battle Against Hollywood Interviewers

Melissa has appeared on InStyle magazine covers and talked about her experience when someone from a big organization interviewed her, who couldn’t stop pressing her about her body. He kept asking, ‘Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?’ He was like, ‘Oh, your tremendous size, you can actually work?’ I just remember all the blood drained out of me. The persistence was shocking, but McCarthy handled it with grace.

There were two cameras on him, and one was on me, and he went back to that question three or four times. When we left, their producer was horrified and said, ‘We’ll never play what he said. I’m so sorry’. This kind of treatment shows exactly what plus-size actresses face behind the scenes.

McCarthy’s Refusal to Follow Extreme Diet Demands

At the beginning of her career, especially during her time on Gilmore Girls, Melissa tried an extreme doctor-supervised liquid diet. She lost a significant amount of weight around 70 pounds in just a few months. But this experience taught her an important lesson about the dangers of Hollywood pressure.

While talking with People in 2011, McCarthy recalled consuming only 500 calories a day, and she ended up dropping 70 pounds in just four months. “I’d never do that again,” she said. “I felt starved and crazy half the time”. This became her turning point in refusing extreme diet demands from the industry.

Lizzo’s Stand Against Weight-Loss Pressure

In 2023, Lizzo told her followers that while she’s been “taking the physical part of her career more seriously” in recent months, she’s “not trying to escape fatness.” She said, “I’ve always loved moving my body. I’ve always loved working out”. Her message was clear – she exercises for her own reasons, not to meet industry standards.

She explained, “I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin. I’m not tryna be thin. I don’t ever want to be thin”. This bold statement directly challenges Hollywood’s obsession with thinness as the ultimate goal.

The singer isn’t standing for rumors either. On September 20, Lizzo brushed off allegations that she was taking the semaglutide Ozempic for weight loss. “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she captioned an Instagram video. She refused to let false narratives define her health journey.

With widespread celebrity use of Ozempic and similar weight loss medications, speculation arose around whether Lizzo had joined the trend. She provided a firm response: she had not taken any weight loss injections or relied on weight loss pills. Instead, the singer clarified that her results were due to months of “weight training and calorie deficit”.

Rebel Wilson’s Contract Revelation

Actor Rebel Wilson opened up this week about having a weight clause in her contract for the Pitch Perfect movies – and her complicated feelings about it. These contracts literally forced her to maintain her size, showing how the industry commodifies bodies for profit.

She admitted, “I played into it and made millions of dollars doing it. Unfortunately, in Hollywood, people need to see you differently in order to cast you differently or give you new opportunities”. Wilson’s honesty revealed the uncomfortable truth about how plus-size actresses are typecast and controlled.

Chrissy Metz revealed that when This Is Us was originally pitched as a film, executives questioned the casting decisions around plus-size characters The comparison showed how warped Hollywood’s perception of body size really is.

The executive continued asking about the character, saying she was “like Kate Winslet,” and Fogelman responded, “First of all, what are you saying? Second of all, no, this is a real woman who’s really dealt with weight issues and it’s plagued her entire life”. This exchange perfectly captures the industry’s disconnection from reality.

Kate Winslet’s Early Career Body Shaming

Kate Winslet gracefully endured criticism about her body in the early days of her career and often had to speak up for herself. Now, she says she’s thrilled to see that more and more young female actors aren’t afraid to take on their critics. Her experience during Titanic became legendary for all the wrong reasons.

“Fat-shaming” was relatively common “back in the day” and she noted that she’s happy to see the tides have turned. “That has changed. And it’s changed because young women now, they’re born with a voice. They have a voice, they’re learning how to hang on to it, they stand up for themselves”.

The Industry’s Weight Clause Problem

For decades, there’s been an unspoken truth about weight clauses in contracts in Hollywood. We’ve heard the stories about Judy Garland and the actors of her time, forced by studio executives to go on strict diets. Garland was even coerced into smoking an excessive amount of cigarettes as a means to maintain a certain weight. These practices continue today in more subtle forms.

In recent years, the industry has gone quiet on this subject. But the implementation of weight clauses has remained the same. Many actresses are still bound by contracts that dictate their body size and appearance.

The courage shown by these actresses in standing up to Hollywood’s weight-loss demands represents a crucial shift in how the entertainment industry treats women’s bodies. Their refusal to conform has opened doors for future generations and challenged the toxic culture that has dominated for decades.
