This Sour Cream Dip is a creamy, zesty dip that’s packed with herby flavor, making it the perfect partner for chips, fresh veggies, or crackers. It comes together in minutes and disappears just as fast.

  • Serving Suggestions: I love serving it with potato chips, bagel chips, oven-baked pretzels, crackers, or a platter of fresh vegetables.

Ingredient Notes

  • Sour cream: Use full-fat sour cream for a thicker, creamier dip, but low-fat sour cream works well too. For a tangier twist, you can substitute all or some with plain Greek yogurt.
  • Mayonnaise: Adds richness and balances the sour cream’s tanginess for a smooth, creamy flavor. Full-fat mayonnaise keeps the dip thick and creamy, but light mayonnaise can also be used.
  • Herbs & Seasonings: Chives add a mild onion flavor and a pop of fresh color. Thinly sliced green onions can be used in a pinch, though the green tops provide the closest flavor. Dried dill, onion powder, and garlic powder round out the flavor.

Variations

  • Add Heat: Add a pinch of cayenne, a dash of hot sauce, or minced jalapeño for a spicy sour cream dip.
  • Add-Ins: Stir in finely chopped green onion, cooked crumbled bacon, or finely diced celery just before serving.

How to Make Sour Cream Dip

  1. Stir together sour cream, mayonnaise, herbs, and seasonings.
  2. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper.
  3. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes (full recipe below).
  • Chill It: Chill the dip before serving. The dried dill, garlic powder, and onion powder need a little time to soften into the creamy base.
  • Stir It: Stir it again after chilling. This makes the texture smooth and helps redistribute the seasonings.
  • Taste It: Taste it after the dip has been chilled. Add salt, pepper, or a pinch more dill as desired.

Keep It Fresh

Keep the dip in an airtight container for up to 7 days. Stir before serving again, since a little liquid may settle on top. Do not freeze.

Make it the night before parties, then garnish with extra chives right before serving for a quick and easy snack.
