Measuring healthspan

For the longest time our age has been defined by the day we were born and the number of times we are fortunate enough to circle the sun. Recent advances in the field of biotechnology hint that in the future we will all recognize two ages: Our traditional measure of age, known as our chronological age or the one that we celebrate every advancing birthday, and our biological age – the age that our cells are acting. As it turns out, these two ages can be quite different, but both are a reality and can positively or negatively influence our healthspan.

We all know of people who look just a little older than the age they are and also a lucky few who look significantly younger than their actual age. The interesting thing is that when you do a new diagnostic test that measures something called DNA methylation, researchers have found that not only do these people look different from their actual age, but the DNA in their cells are reflecting this as well.

In fact, your biological age, if you are not aging well, can be up to 20 or more years older than your chronological age. This means that if you are in your 50s that your cells could be acting like someone in their 70s and makes it much more likely that you will start suffering from the conditions associated with older age much earlier than expected.

The good news is that if you do get a result that suggests your biological age is getting ahead of your chronological age, all is not lost. Your biological age responds to lifestyle changes and certain supplements and can be brought back into line meaning you can literally wind back time and recapture those years.

Amazingly, there are people that have not only brought back their biological age to one that closer resembles their chronological age, but gone further and literally reversed the aging of their cells so that their biological age is substantially younger than their chronological age. There are cases of people in their 50s and 60s who have a biological age two or three decades younger, meaning their cells are acting like someone in their 30s. These are the people that are acing the aging process and will arrive at their 80s, 90s or 100s with amazing health and vitality as they push back the health conditions that arrive with older age much further down the road.

As our understanding of how this process works continues to grow, we will all be able to age better. In the meantime, there are some very simple actions you can take today that can reverse your biological age and increase your chances of arriving into older adulthood with the energy, vitality and health of someone much younger.

Move More Age Less

We all know the importance of regular exercise and a good diet for our health. These two simple actions have a remarkably significant and positive impact on our biological age. Consciously building exercise into our daily life is much easier than you think.  Of course, if you are getting to the gym regularly or able to find time to go walking, running or swimming then you are on the right track. However, if these activities don’t fit into your current lifestyle then consider some other options. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, use a standing desk, walk or cycling to the office or walk the dog during a long conference call. All of these ideas can positively contribute to engineering exercise into your lifestyle while helping to reverse that all-important biological age so that you increase your healthspan.

What And How You Eat Affects Your Age

We are also learning a few diet hacks that can accelerate the improvement of our biological age. For starters, having a predominantly plant-based diet helps, along with getting into the habit of not eating until you are full or busting at the seams.

Occasionally partaking in fasting also helps as it stimulates key cellular pathways that support autophagy, which is a process that can be best described as cellular housekeeping. When autophagy is triggered, the body removes older cells and cellular components that are no longer working optimally and stores them so that when we begin to eat again our body recycles them to make newer versions of those cells and components. The result is we freshen up and repair faulty cells, which has a significant whole-body benefit.

Supplements Are Superior For Slowing Aging

Next in your strategy to slow or even reverse your cellular biological age is adding supplements to your daily healthy aging regime. We are incredibly fortunate to be alive in this day and age because of the in-depth understanding of what supplements are effectively slowing the aging process.

We know now that looking after your DNA by protecting it with molecules like Hobamine (an extract from Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat), can reduce the impact of oxidative stress on your DNA in a way that has not been available to us before; and supporting the key molecular mechanism our cells use to monitor and repair DNA damage with molecules like pterostilbene that promote DNA stability and repair and compounds like NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) and NR (nicotinamide riboside) that boost levels of a key enzyme in our cells that decline with age called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). These are all superior supplements that should be at the top of everyone’s shopping list if they are determined to slow the aging process and live healthier for longer.

Be As Young As You Want To Be

For those of us who want to take their biological age to the next level, then additional supplements are available that tackle all nine of the hallmarks of aging, which are key elements of our cells and cellular system that decline with age. If we can support them with the supplements mentioned above, plus more, then you are giving your cells a holistic program of care that will deliver you a robust healthspan that will pay dividends for a lifetime.

As humans, we are rapidly decoding cellular aging. This means that there are even more options available to us that will extend the number of years of healthy life, or healthspan, available to us. Next time you look in the mirror ask yourself if another 10 or 20 years of a healthy life is something that would be worthwhile to you and if so then set a goal to work on the one age you can control: your biological age. Achieve that and the benefits for you and your loved ones will be beyond measure!
