The Smashing Pumpkins will mark the 30th anniversary of The Aeroplane Flies High with a five-LP reissue due December 18 via UMe. The 1996 collection will be available as a standard five-LP set and a limited-edition color vinyl set, marking its first vinyl release since 2013. Pre-orders for the set are open now.

Originally issued in late 1996, The Aeroplane Flies High collects expanded editions of the five singles from Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness: “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “1979,” “Zero,” “Tonight, Tonight,” and “Thirty-Three.” The set also includes B-sides, rarities and covers of songs by the Cars, Blondie and the Cure, gathering material released around the 1995 double album.

The reissue arrives as two of the band’s albums reach new certification milestones. Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness is now certified 11x Platinum, while Siamese Dream is certified 7x Platinum. The band has also reissued the 1994 B-sides compilation Pisces Iscariot and 1998’s Adore on standard vinyl, and released Absolute Zeros, a retail-exclusive collection of Virgin-era songs including “1979,” “Today” and “Disarm.”

The Smashing Pumpkins began their Rats In A Cage tour on September 30, with dates scheduled through November. The show is built around two separate sets: one focused on Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness following its 30th anniversary, and another spanning nearly four decades of the band’s catalog with hits, deep cuts and fan favorites.

The current activity follows the band’s 2025 anniversary campaign for Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness and a 25th anniversary reissue of Machina/The Machines Of God. Their recent studio releases include 2020’s Cyr, the 2022-23 triple album Atum: A Rock Opera In Three Parts, and 2024’s Aghori Mhori Mei. Earlier this year, the band also returned to Lollapalooza for its first appearance at the festival since the event’s early-1990s touring era.
