Marvel Studios has released The Punisher: One Last Kill, a special presentation focused on Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, and one of its key scenes has gone viral for all the wrong reasons. While the special received positive reviews from critics, fans did not hold back when it came to critiquing a specific moment.

Why did The Punisher: One Last Kill scene go viral?

The scene in question shows Castle falling off the roof of a building after a tense action scene. The shot shows Bernthal’s Castle turning into a CG model, veering into the uncanny valley, moving in a way that isn’t dissimilar to characters in a video game. It’s hard to tell whether it’s a completely computer-generated shot or an unfortunate blend of CG face replacement and slow-motion frame rate.

Fans were quick to point out that the show looks like it came from a cutscene in a PS3 video game. One fan compared Bernthal’s CG model/stuntman to Joel from The Last of Us, a PS3 video game featuring the character in a similar getup. “It looks like a test version of some Joel cutscene for The Last of Us PS3 kkkkk,” said one post. Another post added, “this looks like one of those workplace safety PSA animations that shows how people have died there in the past.”

One poster compared the shot to the infamous scene with a CG deer in The Walking Dead. “I’ve defended Marvel’s questionable CGI on several occasions in other series and movies. This is absolutely lazy and criminal; I can’t find a single defensible point,” read one reaction.

Yeah I literally have no understanding as to why this even occurred in the first place. This is genuinely terrible CGI for a 40 minute special with extremely minimal VFX. https://t.co/t8OMWqY3cw

Besides featuring an arguably wonky shot, One Last Kill sets up Castle’s return to vigilantism in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The special features many easter eggs and references to Castle’s history and other viral memes featuring Bernthal, while setting up a well-known villain from the Punisher comic books.

The Punisher: One Last Kill is streaming on Disney+.
