The plus-size clothing market was valued at USD 198.4 billion in 2024 and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2024 to 2032 driven by growing body positivity and inclusivity movements. What’s shocking isn’t just the size of this market – it’s how long the fashion world ignored it.

Women of color are driving growth with roughly two-thirds of new women-owned businesses started by women of color in 2023. According to recent estimates, women own 39.1% of all U.S. enterprises, and this isn’t just about numbers on a spreadsheet.

The disconnect between market reality and industry representation reached a breaking point in 2024. The Vogue Business size inclusivity report showed a plateau in efforts across major fashion weeks, with only 0.8% of looks being plus-size and 94.9% being straight-size. While consumers were spending billions on plus-size fashion, the industry was doubling down on exclusion.

Globally there are 112 Plus Size Fashion companies which include top companies like Dia, navabi and ELOQUII. These digital-first companies aren’t just filling gaps – they’re completely reimagining how fashion should work.

BloomChic: The Controversial Success Story

BloomChic launched in 2021 offering fashion for women sizes 10-30 to empower access to style, comfort, and choice, initially providing sizes 12 to 14 before expanding to sizes 10 to 30. In December 2024, L Catterton closed a strategic investment in BloomChic to fund technology upgrades and global expansion.

Despite mixed customer reviews, BloomChic represents something bigger than one company. With sizes 10-30 or M-6X, Bloomchic is all about serving plus size and in-between “midsize” shoppers. They have extended plus, which a lot of brands in this price range tend to exclude.

The AI Revolution in Plus-Size Fashion

AI is reshaping fashion retail, with 82% of consumers seeking AI-driven product recommendations and 50% of fashion executives emphasizing AI’s role in product discovery by 2025. Digital-first companies are leading the charge, pouring investments into AI-driven sizing tools and virtual try-ons to address persistent fit challenges.

Tech is stepping in. AI fit tools, virtual try-ons, and personalized recommendations are making it easier to shop online without the dreaded guesswork. According to McKinsey, over 50% of fashion execs believe generative AI will be essential for product discovery by 2025.

Breaking Down the Activewear Barrier

While casualwear has long dominated, activewear is rapidly emerging as a leading category. This shift underscores consumers’ growing preference for high-performance apparel that champions comfort and movement, regardless of body type. Newcomers like ActiveCurve are seizing the opportunity, debuting ergonomic athleisure lines specifically designed for plus-size consumers, especially in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific markets.

By product type, casual wear led with 30.80% of plus-size clothing market share in 2024; sportswear and activewear are projected to advance at a 7.61% CAGR through 2030. This isn’t just about comfort – it’s about representation in spaces where plus-size bodies have been historically excluded.

The Subscription Box Revolution

Dia is an online personal stylist-driven platform to buy fashion apparel exclusively in sizes 14 & above. The users need to provide their details like shape, style and budget. The stylist-curated box contains 5 items and the users only pay for the items they want to keep. It charges $20 as a styling fee.

In July 2023, Dia & Co. introduced a new virtual styling service focused on inclusivity, launching a virtual Styling Service creating a match between the client and the personal stylist. This personalized approach tackles one of the biggest pain points in plus-size shopping – fit uncertainty.

The plus-size clothing market in Asia Pacific is projected to grow at the fastest CAGR of 5.2% from 2024 to 2030. The Asia Pacific market is growing, driven by increasing consumer awareness and demand for inclusive fashion. Asia-Pacific is projected to grow at a 5.2% CAGR through 2030 owing to rising middle-class spending and shifting beauty ideals.

In May 2024, Big Hello opened four new stores in Hyderabad. Big Hello, an Indian niche fashion house catering to plus size people, unveiled that four new physical stores will open in Hyderabad. This signifies growing confidence in the direct-to-consumer channel and the surging need for affordable fashion choices accessible to plus-sized populations.

These companies understand that style isn’t a size – it’s an attitude. While traditional fashion weeks still cling to outdated ideals, these startups are proving that real style comes in every size, backed by billions in consumer spending and powered by technology that finally gets it right.
