The new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, has officially joined forces with Fortnite, and, according to director Jon Favreau, the collaboration could be a long and fruitful one. In a recent interview, Favreau spoke about his vision for the team-up between Star Wars and Fortnite, stating that it could help them in conceptualizing better environments for fans.

Jon Favreau gives update on The Mandalorian and Grogu collab with Fortnite

While talking with GamesRadar+ in London, Jon Favreau spoke about the intricacies of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s collaboration with Fortnite, shedding some light on the deal’s future.

Describing the partnership as an “important one,” the veteran filmmaker revealed, “We’d already been working a lot with Unreal and with Epic, because even the Volume that we created for The Mandalorian was using assets from Unreal Engine. We use a lot of Unreal Engine in the development on the front end of the process, with both the film and the shows. We use game development technology as part of a workflow that borrows a tremendous amount from animation.”

Notably, Disney’s agreement with Epic Games has enabled Lucasfilm to launch The Mandalorian and Grogu Watch Party Island on Fortnite, which allows fans to explore the Nevarro region and also catch a 10-minute sneak-peak of the Star Wars film. Players can also spend time with Grogu, go on IG-11 quests, and hear directly from the director.

Favreau continued, “Clearly, the scale is not one-to-one, but the finishes, the look: it was an opportunity to begin exploring what I think is going to have greater potential, which is not just using these tools for a backdrop of a gaming experience, but also to start to create immersive environments and communal environments.”

He finished by saying, “So this was a first step of what I think is going to be a much larger project when it comes to that partnership. We’re also going to be showing 10 minutes exclusively with an amphitheater that we created on Nevarro before the film comes out.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu will hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
