The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place after the Disney+ show. However, it turns out fans won’t have to have seen all three seasons of it to understand the new Star Wars movie.

The Mandalorian and Grogu stands alone as a moviegoing experience

The Mandalorian & Grogu continues the story from the hit Disney+ series on the big screen. The movie sees Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian, as he goes on a new adventure with his companion Grogu. While the movie does feature a litany of characters from the Disney+ series, the movie itself can actually largely be seen as a completely standalone experience.

The movie, despite featuring Djarin and Grogu, is largely disconnected from the events of the television show. The plot follows Mando as he’s hunting down Imperial officers who are still in hiding following the Empire falling apart. After being tasked by the Hutt twins to find their nephew, Rotta (played by Jeremy Allen White), Djarin finds himself thrust into a big adventure.

While some of the plot lines from the movie, including things like the New Republic and Empire’s end, are from the show, they don’t factor into the movie too much. Some characters from the show also pop up, but the movie is mostly just Pascal’s Mando and Grogu doing their own thing. Although the movie can feel like it’s paced similar to an episode of the show, fans won’t have to do too much homework beforehand. That said, knowing the story will serve as an extra point of enjoyment.

“The evil Empire has fallen, but Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
