The Asylum has released the trailer for The Jolly Monkey, a new horror mockbuster movie playing off of Osgood Perkin’s The Monkey.

The Asylum is a film production and distribution company known for putting out mockbusters, which are low-budget films released around the same time as a major Hollywood blockbuster. In 2024, for example, the studio released The Twisters after Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters hit theaters.

The Asylum is now back with a new mockbuster, The Jolly Monkey, which comes from writer and director Ryan Ebert. The film stars Dominic Keating, Jane Hajduk, and Anthony Jensen.

What happens in The Jolly Monkey trailer?

The trailer for The Jolly Monkey sees two siblings attempt to rebuild an old, crumbling motel. Danger strikes when they uncover an old toy monkey that has mysterious ties to their family’s past.

“Upon their mother’s death, siblings Jenny and Marshall return to renovate her crumbling motel, The Jolly Monkey,” the synopsis reads. “But as they work, a deadly force tied to their family’s dark past emerges, forcing them to face terrifying truths if they want to survive.”

Neon’s The Monkey, which is now playing in United States theaters, has a similar premise in that it follows two twins, Hal and Bill (played by Theo James, while the younger versions are played by Christian Convery), who uncover a toy monkey that begins killing off people they’re close to in bizarre and violent ways. That film also stars Tatiana Maslany, Colin O’Brien, Elijah Wood, and more.

The Jolly Monkey will be released in select United States theaters on February 28, 2025. These theaters include Glendale, California’s Laemmle Glendale; Roswell, Georgia’s Aurora Cineplex; Brooklyn, New York’s Film Noir Cinema; Brunswick, Ohio’s Hickory Ridge Cinemas; and Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Trylon Cinema.

The Jolly Monkey will then be available On Demand on March 1, 2025.
