The Bear Season 5 brought the same chaos that the series has become so famous for, only this time, it was Carmy who initiated it due to a massive mistake. Nevertheless, according to actor Jeremy Allen White, the blunder was actually a very “important moment” for the Michelin-starred chef’s arc.

Jeremy Allen White explains Carmy’s biggest mistake in The Bear Season 5

In a recent interview, the Golden Globe winner explained that even though Carmy’s error in the show’s penultimate episode almost ended up costing his restaurant big time, it was a life-altering juncture for the character.

In Episode 7 of The Bear Season 5, while preparing the meal for ‘Star Man,’ who was actually the representative from the Michelin Guide, Carmy mistakenly drops the finished plate. As he watches in horror, the dish falls to the ground, shattering the plate and ruining the very last piece of lamb.

“That’s such an important moment for Carmy where he’s made the decision that he has to take a step back,” Jeremy Allen White said of The Bear Season 5 Episode 7 scene to E! News. “And he’s discussed that with everybody at this point, but he has a hard time letting go.”

While Carmy is dumbstruck by the mishap, his co-workers make no mistake in rising to the occasion. In a flash, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) instructs Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) to cook her signature Brussels sprouts dish as a substitute dish, which ultimately turns out to be an inspired last-minute call.

Jeremy Allen White continued, “There’s this sort of ego death, and then acceptance of love and support. I think Carmy’s also found it very difficult, historically, to accept care, you know? And so, I think that that moment, as devastating as it is, is really important for Carmy to get to where he’s going, which is ultimately this acceptance and understanding of self.”

Serving as the final installment of the show, The Bear Season 5 is now streaming on FX on Hulu.
