James Gunn gave a release date update on a DCU movie that doesn’t seem to be part of fan speculation these days, The Authority. Gunn is the co-head of the DCU alongside his longtime producing partner Peter Safran. The first cinematic entry in the franchise, Superman, releases on July 11, 2025.

James Gunn says The Authority is still happening, but moving slowly

Gunn gave an interview to Blavity TV recently, and the planned DCU feature, The Authority, came up during the discussion. The filmmaker revealed that the movie was still happening, though it was not coming together “especially quickly right now.”

Gunn was speaking about María Gabriela de Faría’s Angela Spica / The Engineer, a member of the collective known as The Authority in DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint, and her inclusion in Superman. When asked what it was like utilizing that character in the first Superman outing, Gunn said, “I just really like the Engineer’s power set,” and explained that he thought it would be good idea to take elements of The Authority story and give them to Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to combine the DC and Wildstorm characters in the DCU. “I thought her power set was good for fighting Superman,” he added.

This prompted the interviewer to ask whether The Authority was something DC Studios still had plans for, and whether fans would see de Faría reprising her role in it. “We could, for sure. Yeah, it could happen,” Gunn said in response, before clarifying, “It’s not something that’s going especially quickly right now, but it could happen for sure.”

The Authority was announced as part of the DCU’s initial slate back in January 2023. While other projects from that announcement have moved forward since then, The Authority has faced some issues. In February 2025, Gunn said that the project was struggling to come along. (via Variety)

At the time of this article’s composition, The Authority has no official release date. It’s safe to speculate that it will come out sometime after 2027.
