Superman’s James Gunn has revealed what he thinks some of the greatest superhero movies ever made are.

Gunn’s Superman finally opens in United States theaters this coming weekend. The DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Prior to helming the DCU alongside Peter Safran, Gunn also worked on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios, directed 2021’s The Suicide Squad, and created the Peacemaker television series.

What are James Gunn’s favorite superhero movies?

Appearing on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, Gunn was asked what he thinks the greatest superhero movies ever made are.

“Into the Spider-Verse, the first one, is the greatest,” he answered. “Donner’s Superman. Iron Man. Iron Man, really — I’d say Iron Man is great. I’m forgetting something.”

Gunn and Shepard also expressed their affection for the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movies, as Gunn said, “I actually love all three of them. Like, they’re all really good.”

Gunn has not yet announced what he plans to direct after Superman, though he did write all the scripts for the next DCU project, Peacemaker Season 2, which will premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.

Superman hits theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025.
