Hawkgirl and Green Lantern could link up in the DCU, per Superman’s Isabela Merced
While speaking to Nerdist, along with her Superman co-stars, Merced reflected on the romance that took place between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series. The Madame Web star revealed that she is not only a big fan of the iconic superhero’s arc in the cartoon shows, but would also love to explore a similar angle in the DCU.
“I really love the idea – and that’s why I love Lois and Clark’s stories, like the alien and human love story. There’s just something so romantic about that to me,” said the Superman actor while talking about Green Lantern’s association with Hawkgirl in Justice League Unlimited. “It’s like, ‘We shouldn’t, but we should, but we shouldn’t.’ And that really got my heart as a kid, it broke my heart too, you know, when she eventually abandoned [the team]. The betrayal is crazy,” she added.
Merced then praised Maria Canals-Barrera’s portrayal of Hawkgirl in the Justice League animated shows before noting that she is enthusiastic about what is to come for her character in the DCU after Superman. “My love for the character that Maria brought to the show, it definitely transferred to this version, who is not Shayera [Thal], she’s Kendra [Saunders], but still she has all the memories of her past life,” the 23-year-old actress stated. She continued, “So I’m definitely a huge fan of her story, and I can’t wait to see how that evolves or if there even is a romantic aspect that could potentially…because I’m a romantic at heart, for sure.”
While what transpires in Hawkgirl’s love life in the revamped DCU is yet to be seen, fans can catch Isabela Merced’s debut as the beloved superhero in Superman, which premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025.
