At Stella McCartney SS27, presented at Paris Fashion Week, rain showers greeted guests at the show, setting the scene for the collection inspired by the sea. Following Tuesday’s scorching heat of Paris, the downpour served as a timeless reminder of our connection with nature. The opening was with David Attenborough’s prologue to the 2025 documentary Ocean, bringing attention to the importance of protecting the planet’s marine ecosystems.

McCartney’s childhood fascination with the underwater world came through in playful, sculptural details—wave-like details, trimmed crisp poplin shirts and bubble peplum tops that looked similar to a jellyfish. The motifs appeared as corded detailing on a pale pink blazer lapel and satin mini dress neckline—a sky-blue ruched dress with cut-outs on the waist and a similar arrangement created with clear diamond-like stones on the blue trouser waistline, bringing a sense of fluidity to the look.

Sustainability remained central to the collection, extending beyond the finished garments to the materials themselves. McCartney emphasised the need to rethink the fibres used in fashion and called on the luxury industry’s major players to help bring lower-impact alternatives to a wider scale.

Tailor took on a softer, more fluid form, with oversized shoulders defining suits in cream, blush and chocolate brown. Some were cinched with drawstrings by the waist, while others were left open with bralettes. An organza sleeved shirt and layers of translucent trousers introduced a sense of lightness, while a sparkling sequin jumpsuit work beneath a roomy ivory blazer brought a touch of evening wear.

Accessories continued the balance of practicality and playfulness, from aquatic-like see-through clutches and animal leather bags to woven coral shoulder bags—the house’s signature chain-trimmed Falabella also made an appearance, grounding the looks in Stella McCartney, who established design codes.

With SS27, McCartney brought together fluid silhouettes, playful marine references and sincere commitment to sustainability.
