Matt Smith recently hinted at his part in Star Wars: Starfighter, describing his character as an “interesting guy or girl.” After nearly joining the franchise years ago, the actor has now officially filmed his scenes for the new movie.

Matt Smith teases his Star Wars: Starfighter role

Matt Smith recently sat down with Josh Horowitz to promote House of the Dragon Season 3, which premieres on June 21. The two also discussed Smith’s experience with joining the new Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter.

The Doctor Who star confirmed that he has already filmed scenes for the movie. However, when Horowitz asked about his character, he stayed secretive. The actor simply teased, saying, “He’s a pretty interesting guy… or girl. Who knows? I can’t say too much.”

Horowitz also noted that Smith almost appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker several years ago. At that time, he had been cast in a role, but the character was ultimately rewritten and removed from the story. Looking back, The Crown actor said things worked out for the best because he “loved” making the new film.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be directed by Shawn Levy and will star Ryan Gosling. Matt Smith recalled his meeting with the filmmaker, who explained the character, the story world, and some of the people potentially involved in the project. What seems to have excited the actor most is that the movie has both the huge scale people expect from Star Wars and the detailed work of a more intimate, human story.

Star Wars: Starfighter’s cast will also include Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Daniel Ings, Mia Goth, Simon Bird, and Flynn Gray, among others. The screenplay is written by Jonathan Tropper, while Lucasfilm and 21 Laps Entertainment serve as the production companies. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will handle the distribution.

The movie is currently scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
