Ingredient Notes
- Steaks: Use ribeye, sirloin (great budget-friendly option), or New York steak, but make sure they are thicker steaks. At least ¾-inch, but I prefer 1-inch for the best results.
- Steak Seasoning: Use your favorite steak seasoning blend, or season with coarse salt and freshly cracked black pepper.
- Marinade (optional): For an extra pop of flavor, try my homemade steak marinade, or toss in a zippered bag with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and some Italian seasoning for an hour or two before cooking.
How to Make Air Fryer Steak
How Long to Air Fry Steaks
Refer to your owner’s guide for precise cooking information from your appliance, but here’s a general guideline for a 1″ steak.
- Rare: 6 to 7 minutes (125°F)
- Medium Rare: 7 to 8 minutes (135°F )
- Medium: 8 to 10 minutes (145°F)
- Medium Well: 10 to 11 minutes (155°F)
- Well-Done: 12 to 15 minutes (160°F)
Use an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part to determine the internal temperature, and take the steak out about 5° below your desired doneness. The residual heat will finish bringing it to temperature.

- Pat Dry: Pat the steaks dry before seasoning for better browning.
- The Best Crust: Always preheat the air fryer and use room temperature steaks for the best results.
- Cook in a Single Layer: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the air can circulate evenly around the steak.
- Let Rest: Allow the steaks to rest for at least 5 minutes after cooking to help seal in the juices before serving.
Storing Leftovers
- Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Reheat in the air fryer at 300°F or in a covered skillet with a splash of broth.

- ▢ 2 tablespoons steak butter or garlic herb butter, optional, below
Remove steaks from the fridge at least 30 minutes before cooking.
Preheat air fryer to 400°F.
Rub the steaks with olive oil and melted butter. Generously season on each side.
Add the steaks to the air fryer basket and cook 8 to 12 minutes (flipping after 4 minutes) or until steaks reach desired doneness.
Remove steaks from the air fryer and transfer to a plate. Rest at least 5 minutes before serving.
Top with additional butter if desired and serve.
Air Fryers can vary, cook times are approximate. I highly suggest a meat thermometer (until you know your Air Fryer) to ensure steaks don’t overcook. If your steak is cold from the fridge, it will need more time.
Steaks that are a minimum of ¾” thick (or thicker) cook best in the air fryer
Cook times are for a 1″ steak; adjust times as needed for thinner or thicker steaks.
- Medium Rare: Cook the steak 8-9 minutes flipping after 4 minutes.
- Medium: Cook the steak 9-11 minutes flipping after 4 minutes.
