Simu Liu talks Shang-Chi’s return possibility in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man 4

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Simu Liu dodged questions about his character Shang-Chi’s future in the MCU. When asked if he would appear in Spider-Man 4, Liu laughed and responded, “Oh, I’m not even—I’m not even going near that one.” He continued, “I haven’t heard anything,” but acknowledged his enthusiasm for Marvel projects, saying, “I love people who love those movies, and I also love those movies.”

Recently, Liu addressed concerns about Shang-Chi 2 following the announcement that director Destin Daniel Cretton would be directing Spider-Man 4. Speaking with ScreenRant, Liu stated, “I don’t think anything’s been impacted,” and added, “I think we’re all… I speak to Destin often and there’s nothing coming out of both of us but excitement to make this film.” As per reports, Shang-Chi’s sequel has been in development for over three years, though Marvel has not provided any official updates.

The 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, a martial arts master facing his past. The cast includes Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, and Benedict Wong. The movie earned $432.2 million worldwide.

In September 2024, it was revealed that Cretton would direct Spider-Man 4, sparking speculation about delays for Shang-Chi 2. Cretton also seems to be involved in the upcoming Wonder Man miniseries on Disney Plus. Marvel plans to release Spider-Man 4 on July 31, 2026. Liu has not confirmed whether Shang-Chi will appear in future MCU projects like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
