Review:

Overview:

Power City Arena is a hide-and-seek game with a deck-building twist. The theme is cool, and the art style is absolutely sick. It’s the kind of game that catches your eye instantly, plays fast and is brutal to sore losers.

Game Modes and Mechanics:

The game offers four different modes, which is a solid plus. I’m not a big fan of free-for-all matches, so having the option to team up is a great addition. It keeps things fresh and allows players to choose how they want to experience the game.

That being said, after playing the demo, I found some of the mechanics a bit unbalanced or misleading as I was able to One Shot one of my adversaries hero on turn 3. The deck-building aspect is interesting and builds slowly enough that everybody would understand his own deck.

I love the asymmetrical start and the detail that has been given in the overall factions’ feeling.

A gimmick I don’t understand: Random Turn Order:

One feature that really bothers me is the random turn order. In a tactical combat game, every move counts. If the game randomly decides your opponent goes first, they might just destroy you before you even get a chance to react. That kind of randomness can ruin an entire match, which is frustrating. I really hope this gets addressed in the final version.  Especially when playing 2v2 something must be done so that two players can’t move all of their characters straight after one another without letting the opposite team react.

Table Top mod:

The Power City Arena mod for Tabletop Simulator is a decent adaptation, but it has its limitations.

First off, the board size is a bit of an issue. On a physical table, you can at least adjust your position to get a better view, but in TTS, managing a large board  and multiple side boards can be clunky.

Automation is another area where the mod could have done better. Manually handling everything slows down the game, and while the core mechanics work fine, having some scripted actions like turn shuffling.

That said, the mod is solid overall. It does a good job of bringing the game to a digital space, keeping in mind this is a demo version.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, Power City Arena is an ambitious attempt at blending deck-building with an arena fighting game. The concept is great, the execution is decent, but the balancing could be improved. I only played a demo of the game, and would keep an eye on it !  If you are looking for a free for all fighting game that might be what you need.
