Welcome back to another week of The Curvy Fashionista’s Plus Influencer Spotlight, our series celebrating the boundary breakers, tastemakers, and changemakers redefining plus size fashion and culture, like Latoya of The Fat Girl of Fashion.

Each feature in this series highlights a voice that’s helping shape the future of plus size fashion, one unapologetic look, one powerful post, and one bold statement at a time. Last week, we spotlighted FashionMaBE (Jaimee Rucker), the DC-based creator blending faith, fashion, and confidence into a movement. This week, we’re heading to Chicago to meet a woman whose name is a rallying cry in itself… LaToya Wright, the force behind The Fat Girl of Fashion.

Why This Plus Influencer Series Matters

Social media didn’t just change the fashion landscape… it rebuilt it. The rise of Instagram, TikTok, and blogging created the perfect runway for voices like LaToya’s to be heard. And with that came a revolution: the growth of plus size fashion as both a business and a cultural movement.

Once an overlooked niche, the plus size fashion space is now a multi-billion-dollar industry and influencers have been the driving force behind that visibility. Research from Influencer Hero shows that top plus size creators in the U.S. average engagement rates above 2%, outperforming many mainstream fashion influencers. And according to The Social Cat, nano and micro influencers, which include many plus size creators, deliver the highest engagement in the industry, proving that representation resonates.

In short: social media didn’t just open the door… it ushered in an entirely new era of plus size fashion visibility.

And few people embody that shift more authentically than LaToya Wright, a Chicago-born creator, writer, and style powerhouse who’s been giving voice to her city’s plus size community for years.

How Social Media Helped Plus Size Fashion Take Up Space

Let’s be real, the growth of plus size fashion literally rode the wave of social media. Before Instagram and TikTok, representation was scarce. Now? Plus size creators command millions of followers and major brand partnerships. According to Launchmetrics, influencer marketing in fashion grew over 700% in the last decade, and plus size creators are leading some of the most engaging campaigns, often outperforming mainstream influencers in authenticity and community engagement.

Creators like LaToya didn’t just join the conversation, they built the stage.

The Fat Girl of Fashion on the Voice of Chicago’s Plus Size Community

“I started thefatgirloffashion.com to give a voice to Chicago’s plus size community,” LaToya shares. What began as a local blog became a platform amplifying plus size visibility with sharp commentary, fearless style, and relatable honesty.

Her audience first made her realize her power when her DMs filled with messages from women and girls saying her words made them feel seen. That kind of connection? That’s influence, not in likes, but in the quiet screenshots saved for inspiration later.

“Influence is often not found in likes but in quiet screenshots saved in phones used as inspo for later,” LaToya says.

Her Style: Quirky Streetwear Meets Confidence

LaToya’s personal style blends boldness with street-smart energy, what she calls “a mix of corky streetwear.” But her journey with fashion goes deeper than trends.

“My size has influenced my personal style the most,” she explains. “I’ve been fat since I was a child, and accessories have always fit. I build from there to this day.”

Her signature power look?

“A two-piece suit with a sexy bra as a top. With this look, I can’t be stopped.”

We’ll co-sign that energy.

What Brands Need to Understand

When asked what she wishes brands knew, LaToya doesn’t mince words:

“We want and deserve all the things straight size women have and want. Our desires are the same.”

It’s a simple truth that still needs amplifying. Plus size consumers aren’t asking for separate tables, they’re asking for inclusion, respect, and style equity.

And her favorite hack for finding those stylish gems?

“The men’s section is a jewel hiding in plain sight.”

What’s Next: BravCon and Beyond

Next up, LaToya is heading to Las Vegas to cover BravCon, bringing her signature “FOMO content” for fans who love her witty commentary and unfiltered takes. You can follow along at thefatgirloffashion.com for behind-the-scenes coverage and style inspo.

Her ongoing mission? To remind plus size women everywhere to step into the world…  unapologetically.

“Plus size women should be out in the world taking up space.”
