Patti Smith has released a statement reassuring fans that she is “fine” after collapsing on stage in Brazil on Wednesday night (January 29). According to The Associated Press, Smith fell during a presentation at the Cultura Artística Theater, in São Paulo, which led to her ending her show early. Smith since has clarified that she was dealing with “some post migraine dizziness,” and that it was “a small incident.” Find her full remarks below.

Smith reportedly passed out roughly 30 minutes into the event while reading a piece about climate change. After being taken backstage, she returned to apologize to the crowd. “Unfortunately, I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish,” she reportedly told the audience. “So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly.” Smith then sang “Wing” and “Because the Night” a capella.

“I was checked out by an excellent doctor and was absolutely fine,” Smith explained. “Please do not accept any other story. With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention. Thank you everyone for your concern. Trust me I am fine.” She also mentioned that “a grossly exaggerated account [of the incident] is being spread by the press and social media.”

Smith has been in São Paulo for a two-day presentation of the “Correspondences” project with the Berlin-based group Soundwalk Collective. The group, in an Instagram story, shared, “Patti says that she is tremendously grateful for your patience and forgiveness and she sends her love to all who attended.”

Patti Smith:

This is
letting everyone know
that I am fine. A grossly
exaggerated account is
being spread by the press
and social media. I had
some post migraine dizziness.
Had a small incident, left the
stage, and returned 10 minutes
later and talked to the people,
told them I was fine and sang
them Wing and Because the night.
I was checked out by an excellent
Doctor and was absolutely fine.
Please do not accept any other story .
With all the strife in the world,
this explainable incident does
not merit so much attention.
Thank you everyone for your
concern. Trust me I am fine.
