The series finale of Outlander ended with an unexpected post-credits scene, and the showrunner has weighed in on the same. After the emotional ending involving Claire and Jamie Fraser, the additional scene featuring Diana Gabaldon raised several questions about its meaning. One of the minds behind the show has now explained why the scene was added and explained its meaning.

What happens in Outlander finale post-credits scene?

The post-credits scene of Outlander delivers one final surprise following the emotional ending of the series finale. After the final battlefield scene, the episode continues with an additional scene that shifts to a modern-day bookstore in America.

The scene features Diana Gabaldon, the author behind the Outlander novels, appearing as herself during a signing event for Outlander. During the interaction, viewers can spot a journal placed beside her. It closely resembles the writings Claire used to document her life and experiences with Jamie Fraser throughout the story.

Gabaldon then jokingly refers to the journal as a “wee bit of inspiration” while continuing the interaction with fans at the signing table.

Matthew B. Roberts talks about Outlander finale post-credits scene and cameo

Matthew B. Roberts has shared new details about the post-credits sequence featured in the finale of Outlander. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner explained that the additional scene was designed as a tribute to the people who had worked on the series since its beginning.

According to Roberts, the bookstore sequence served as “our love letter and a thank you to all the crew that had been there from day one.” He further revealed, “Everybody in the bookstore is someone who had been on the show from day one.” Roberts also explained the decision to feature Diana Gabaldon in the final scene of the series. “We also wanted to say thank you to [author] Diana [Gabaldon] for creating the world. It’s really her story,” the showrunner said.

Roberts additionally confirmed that he briefly appears in the post-credits scene himself. He revealed that he was not originally part of the filmed scene but was later added digitally. “ I was talked into doing a walk-through, so we did me on blue screen, and they put me in,” the showrunner explained.
