Hulu is adding another acclaimed title to its streaming lineup next month. Selma, the award-winning historical drama starring Oprah Winfrey in its ensemble cast, is set to arrive on the platform soon. Widely praised upon release, the film remains one of the most popular historical dramas of the 2010s.

Selma to stream on Hulu very soon

Selma will soon be available to stream on Hulu. According to Hulu Press, the acclaimed historical drama is scheduled to join the platform’s library on July 1, 2026.

Directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb, Selma received a wide theatrical release in the United States on January 9, 2015. The film follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a crucial chapter of the civil rights movement as he leads a campaign to secure equal voting rights in Alabama.

Over the course of three months, King and fellow activists organize a march from Selma to Montgomery while facing fierce opposition. As the movement gains national attention, pressure increases on political leaders to respond. The campaign ultimately culminates in President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

David Oyelowo portrays Martin Luther King Jr., with Tom Wilkinson appearing as President Lyndon B. Johnson. The film’s cast also includes Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, André Holland as Andrew Young, Giovanni Ribisi as Lee C. White, and Lorraine Toussaint as Amelia Boynton Robinson.

The movie received widespread acclaim from critics on release. On Rotten Tomatoes, Selma holds a 99 percent score from critics based on 309 reviews. Audience response was also strong, with the film earning an 86 percent audience rating on the platform.

Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent wrote in his review of the film, “Selma is a rousing political drama, made with enough verve and passion never merely to seem didactic.” The critic also praised Oyelowo’s work, writing, “Oyelowo’s exceptional performance captures not just Martin Luther King’s distinctive way of speaking but his gravitas and moral authority, too.”
