Nickelback is getting vulnerable on their new song “Make Me Love You.”

The Canadian rock band released the new track on Thursday (September 24), offering another taste of their upcoming album Everything Under the Sun, which arrives October 30.

“Make Me Love You” finds the band singing about the uncertainty that comes with falling for someone new and wondering whether it’s worth opening yourself up if the relationship is ultimately going to end in heartbreak.

The song begins with the narrator feeling frustrated and ready for a change before unexpectedly meeting someone who quickly changes his outlook.

After spending time together and getting swept up in the moment, however, he starts questioning how serious the connection really is.

What Does “Make Me Love You” Mean?

The central idea comes through in the title: he’s essentially asking the other person not to let him fall in love unless they’re actually planning to stick around.

“We can take it back if it ain’t meant to be,” Chad Kroeger sings at one point as he considers slowing the relationship down before either person becomes too involved.

The chorus then turns that uncertainty into a warning. He knows that becoming attached means suddenly having something to lose: “Don’t make me love you If you ain’t gonna stay all night.”

Nickelback described the track as exploring “the uncertainty, vulnerability and emotional risk” involved in opening yourself up to another person.

According to the band, the song captures the space between the excitement of finding something real and the fear of what could happen if it doesn’t last.

Nickelback also released an official music video for the song, directed by Nigel Dick.

The visual stars Jen Araki Playfair as Jenny, alongside a canine co-star named Fancy Pants.
