Emilia Jones is set to lead Netflix’s upcoming limited series The Retrievals, an adaptation of the New York Times and Serial Productions podcast. The drama follows IVF patients who pursue legal action after a nurse’s fentanyl theft leaves them undergoing procedures without anesthesia. The project marks another major collaboration between the actress and the streaming platform following her work on Locke & Key.

Emilia Jones lands a lead role in Netflix’s adaptation of The Retrievals podcast

Netflix has added Emilia Jones, known for her roles in movies like CODA and The Running Man, to the cast of The Retrievals. According to Variety, the actress will have a lead role in its upcoming limited series based on the popular podcast. The project revolves around a case involving IVF patients at Yale Fertility Center who discovered that their procedures had been performed without anesthesia after a nurse stole fentanyl.

Jones will portray Gabby Clemente, a bartender and student teacher from New Haven whose life is disrupted after a traumatic egg retrieval procedure. Following the procedure, Gabby learns about the theft and begins looking for other patients who went through similar experiences. Her search eventually develops into a legal fight against Yale University.

The series draws from the podcast’s reporting on the case. It involved nearly 100 women who were affected by the fentanyl theft. Netflix announced the adaptation in May as part of its upcoming projects.

Molly Smith Metzler is overseeing The Retrievals as its writer, showrunner, and executive producer. The series is being produced by LuckyChap and Quiet Coyote. Executive producers include Colin McKenna, Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley and Margot Robbie. New York Times journalist Caitlin Roper and podcast host Susan Burton also serve as executive producers on the project.

Lila Neugebauer is set to direct the pilot episode of the series and serve as an executive producer. As of now, Netflix has not announced a release date for the limited series.
