In 2004’s National Treasure, the brilliant Ben Gates is a treasure hunter searching for the Freemason fortune, which has been lost for hundreds of years. After finding a pivotal clue, Ben deduces that an invisible map is located on the back of the Declaration of Independence. When Ben’s former teammate Ian Howe (Sean Bean) betrays him, Ben deduces that the only way to protect the document is to steal it for himself.
Directed by Jon Turteltaub, National Treasure stars Cage, Bean, Harvey Keitel, Jon Voight, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, and Christopher Plummer. The movie grossed over $347 million worldwide.
Three years later, Disney released the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The movie was an even bigger commercial hit, grossing over $459 million.
15 years later, the franchise pivoted to television with the Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History. The only actors from the movies who appeared as special guest stars were Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha. The series was canceled after one season.
