Miles Teller, who portrayed Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in 20th Century Fox’s 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, recently spoke about the movie’s poor critical and commercial performance. He said that the movie failed because of one “really important person.”

Miles Teller blames one person for Fantastic Four’s failure

Teller looked back on Fantastic Four’s failure during a new interview with SiriusXM. When initially asked if he and other people associated with the movie knew that it “wasn’t great,” Teller said, “I think it’s unfortunate for that because so many people worked so hard on that movie. He then added, “Honestly, maybe there was one really important person who kind of f—– it all up. Yeah.”

The Top Gun: Maverick actor proceeded to explain why he joined the movie in the first place. “Especially as a young actor, at that time, it’s like, ‘All right, if you wanna be taken seriously as a leading man, you gotta get on this superhero train,'” Teller said. “And that was our chance, and the casting, I thought, was spectacular. I love all those actors.”

Teller further shared, “When I first saw the movie, I remember talking to one of the studio heads, and I was like, ‘I think we’re in trouble,'” he recalled.

Josh Trank, who helmed the 2012 found footage superhero psychological thriller movie Chronicle, directed Fantastic Four from a screenplay he penned with Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg.

The cast also includes Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm / the Thing, and Toby Kebbell as Victor Von Doom / Dr. Doom. The movie underperformed at the box office and currently has a 9% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 260 reviews.

There were plans for a Fantastic Four sequel, but they didn’t materialize. Eventually, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps came out as an MCU movie in July 2025.
