The worldwide box office performance of Michael continued to be unscathed over the weekend as the film moved closer to the $600 million mark globally. The musical biopic based on the life of Michael Jackson has now grossed $577 million worldwide amid the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Michael is very close to $600 million at box office

The $577 million worldwide box office numbers place Michael among the highest-grossing biographical films ever released, as it has become only the second music biopic to cross $500 million at the global box office. It currently trails only Bohemian Rhapsody, which ended its theatrical run with over $903.6 million worldwide, as per reports.

Industry projections now expect the film to cross $600 million globally within the next week. Additionally, it is also estimated that the biopic could finish its theatrical run at around $800 million worldwide, although its long-term total may depend on performances in some international markets that have not yet opened. After all, the film still awaits release in South Korea and Japan, two territories considered important for its international performance.

Furthermore, domestically, Michael has already established a record within its genre. The film has got $240 million in the United States, making it the highest-grossing music biopic in the domestic market. The film maintained steady momentum, dropping around 33% between its second and third weekends and making $36.5 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Moreover, financially, the biopic has already proven successful. With a reported production budget of $155 million, Michael has crossed the threshold typically required for profitability. It is often estimated at double or 2.5 times the budget.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film traces the early life and rise of Michael Jackson, chronologically, from his time with the Jackson 5 to the Bad tour era. The movie stars Jaafar Jackson in the lead role. Its supporting cast also includes Nia Long, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
