Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayScooby-Doo is heading in a completely different direction with a new anime-inspired series set in Japan, and longtime fans are getting some familiar voices back for the ride. The upcoming project brings back Matthew Lillard and Frank Welker while mixing the classic mystery formula with mythical creatures, anime visuals, and a brand-new supporting cast.
Matthew Lillard and Frank Welker to voice Shaggy and Scooby in new anime series
Yokoso Scooby-Doo! has officially been announced as a Tubi Original, giving the decades-old franchise a major anime makeover. The story follows Scooby-Doo and Shaggy during a food-focused trip across Japan that quickly spirals into chaos after they accidentally set free hundreds of dangerous mythical monsters. To stop them, the pair teams up with Scooby’s uncle Daisuke-Doo, magical girl Yume, and tech expert Takumi (via Deadline).
The biggest draw for longtime fans may be the return of Matthew Lillard and Frank Welker. Welker has been connected to the franchise since 1969, first voicing Fred Jones before eventually becoming the official voice of Scooby-Doo in 2002. Lillard first played Shaggy in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo movie and later continued voicing the character in animated projects as well.
Tubi content chief Adam Lewinson said the goal was to “reinvent” the franchise in a fresh way while still keeping the mystery and humor fans expect. Warner Bros. Animation is producing the series, while Japanese animation studio OLM is handling production support. Itsuro Kawasaki will direct the show.
The Scooby-Doo brand has remained popular for more than five decades because of its mix of comedy, spooky mysteries, and memorable characters. The franchise includes over a dozen TV shows and more than 40 movies across animation and live action. The original series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, still holds a strong 7.9 IMDb rating, while the 2002 live-action movie sits at 5.4 but became a cult favorite among younger fans thanks to its cast, including Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, and Lillard.
