Emerald Fennell wanted to keep Margot Robbie’s ‘extremely hairy armpits’ scene

Emerald Fennell thinks she should have included a deleted scene featuring Margot Robbie’s hairy armpits in the final cut of Wuthering Heights. In an interview with The Guardian, the director even explained why the scene could have made sense given the character’s circumstances in the period drama.

Robbie played Cathy Earnshaw in the adaptation of Emily Brontë‘s classic 1847 novel. Fennell revealed that the scene showing Cathy’s lack of razors was initially shot, but “unfortunately the scene that we see them didn’t make it in there”, she said. For her, the deleted scene “was so important to me” in terms of the character depiction.

The director also discussed a particular scene in Wuthering Heights in which Robbie’s character sticks her finger into a dead fish’s mouth. “We had all of the different fish, we had fish with lipstick on, we had real fish, fake fish, in the end that was a real fish. But poor Margot. I mean she had to do that. There were 12 of them.”

With Wuthering Heights, Emerald Fennell delivered her career’s biggest project to date, with the romantic period drama grossing nearly $242 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, according to The Numbers.

The film made a strong impression following its streaming debut on HBO Max earlier this month. The R-rated title arrived on May 3, 2026, and reached the No.1 spot on the platform’s U.S. movie charts. Although it didn’t fare well with critics, with a Tomatometer score of 57%, Wuthering Heights earned a solid Popcornmeter score of 75% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
