Lanterns Episode 3 might have quietly teased a major Green Lantern character through a mysterious cameo. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the latest episode has fans convinced that it showed an iconic comic character.

The moment appears near the beginning of “OutKast,” when John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) arrives to be interviewed by the Guardians about potentially becoming the next Green Lantern. As he enters, another person walks out, seemingly after finishing the same interview to potentially replace Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

While the episode doesn’t confirm his identity, eagle-eyed DC fans quickly began speculating that the mysterious man could be Kyle Rayner. On X, @onlypeluayo asked, “Kyle Rayner teaser? Maybe not, but who is this guy?” with a Lanterns hashtag.

Another fan, @GL2411, posted a similar question, writing, “Was this dude supposed to be some sort of Kyle Rayner Easter Egg?” A third viewer, @B0rnLeader951, pointed out that the Guardians choose Green Lanterns and noted Rayner’s comic history.

However, there has been no confirmation that the man is Rayner. It remains unclear whether the scene is an intentional nod or simply a passing moment.

Who is Kyle Rayner and why does it make sense that he’d show up in Lanterns?

Kyle Rayner is one of the prominent figures in Green Lantern comics. Guardian Ganthet gives him the final power ring after Hal Jordan turns rogue and wipes out almost all Guardians. Rayner then becomes Earth’s primary Green Lantern.

Rayner spent years operating as a solo hero before the Corps was eventually rebuilt. That earned him a central role in the Honor Guard, ranking just behind Salakk and the Guardians themselves. The Torchbearer also hosted the Ion entity and served on the Justice League of America.

His potential appearance would fit the show’s wider exploration of Green Lantern mythology. The latest installment in the series establishes that the Guardians are preparing John to replace Hal. It makes the selection process especially important given Rayner’s long history in the comics.

The scene could therefore be setting up another Lantern for James Gunn’s DCU. For now, the cameo remains only a fan theory.

Lanterns’ third episode is streaming on HBO Max, and a new episode will be out on September 6, 2026
