La Sportiva Bushido III Trail Runner Review

The La Sportiva Bushido has long been a favorite among hikers and trail running enthusiasts, known for its reliable performance, technical prowess, and durability on rugged terrain. The Bushido III builds on the strengths of its predecessors while introducing several notable updates. This review covers their fit, performance, comfort, durability, and overall value.

Design

At first glance, the Bushido III maintains the aggressive, purposeful look that’s become synonymous with the series. The shoe’s toothy outsole signals readiness for rocky terrain.  The upper now features breathable mesh with strategic reinforcements, striking a balance between protection and ventilation.

Slipping them on, you’ll notice that the fit is snug—especially around the midfoot—thanks to a redesigned lacing system. Those with wide feet may find the toe box a bit narrow. Wide sizes are also available.

Updates from Bushido II

  • Upper: An updated upper with a redesigned mesh for enhanced breathability and comfort. The overlays are also more durable.
  • Toe Protection: The toe bumper is more pronounced and protective on the III.
  • Outsole: The III features a new lug pattern for improved traction and mud-shedding.
  • Fit: The III offers a slightly roomier fit in the toebox, addressing some complaints about the II’s narrowness.
  • Tongue Design: The tongue is more padded and gusseted on the III for debris protection.
  • Sustainability: Bushido III uses more recycled materials.

Grip and Traction

Grip is where the Bushido III truly shines. The outsole features FriXion Red rubber with multi-directional lugs, providing excellent traction on a range of surfaces, from slick wet rocks to loose dirt and steep inclines. The lugs are deep enough to bite into softer ground but not so pronounced that they feel clunky on harder surfaces.

Protection

A rock plate in the forefoot shields against sharp objects. Sidewall reinforcements protect against roots and rocks that might otherwise bruise or scrape your feet. The toe kick wraps around the front of the foot and even on top for added protection, a must-have on rocky hiking trails.

Cushioning and Ride

Compared to many modern trail shoes that emphasize plush cushioning, the Bushido III offers a firmer ride. The compression-molded EVA midsole provides sufficient shock absorption while maintaining a responsive ground feel. Hikers used to max-cushion trail runners will find the Bushido III less forgiving.

Comfort and Fit

La Sportiva has refined the fit of the Bushido III with softer internal padding around the collar and tongue. The heel cup is secure without causing hot spots, and there’s enough padding to prevent irritation. The tongue is gusseted to keep debris out. Unfortunately, there isn’t a gaiter trap on the heel, a feature that we wish more brands would recognize as a must-have for hikers and trail runners.

The shoe runs a 1/2 size small (US) for most people, but its relatively narrow fit may not suit everyone. For those with average or narrow feet, the locked-in fit translates to greater confidence on uneven ground, but it takes some getting used to if you’ve previously worn wider shoes. Wide sizes are available.

Breathability and Weather Resistance

One of the more noticeable improvements in the Bushido III is its breathability. The mesh upper allows for improved airflow compared to previous versions, reducing overheating. While it’s not waterproof, it dries quickly after water crossings. One of the big reasons people like this shoe is that it drains quickly.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional traction on technical terrain
  • Stable and supportive platform
  • Protective design (rock plate, sidewall reinforcements)
  • Improved breathability
  • Secure fit for narrow to average feet
  • Wide sizes are available
  • Not waterproof and quick drying

Cons

  • Firmness may not suit those seeking maximum cushioning
  • Not ideal for road-to-trail transitions (better suited to technical trails)
  • Still no gaiter trap in heel

Conclusion

The La Sportiva Bushido III is an outstanding choice for hikers and trail runners who prioritize stability, grip, and foot protection on technical trails. While its firm ride and snug fit may not appeal to everyone (wide sizes are available), its performance in demanding conditions is hard to beat. For dayhikers, peak baggers, backpackers, fast-packers, or anyone looking for confidence on rough ground, the Bushido III remains one of the best technical trail runners available.
