John Legend’s new album, Muse, brings together the singer-songwriter and Pharrell Williams for their first full-length project as collaborators. Williams produced the album and co-wrote its songs, shaping a set that draws on gospel, soul, doo-wop, Afrobeats and hip-hop, with strings, horns and 808s anchoring its arrangements.

John Legend, Clipse - Bodies On The Floor (Audio)

The album grew from a guest appearance on Clipse’s Let God Sort ’Em Out. Legend sang on “The Birds Don’t Sing,” and the track prompted Williams to build a larger project around Legend’s voice. The pair recorded much of Muse at Williams’ studio inside Louis Vuitton’s Paris headquarters, extending a friendship that began more than two decades ago. Legend described their approach as “a Black James Bond feel” with “a modern backbeat at its foundation.”

“Muse” follows a relationship through desire, commitment and betrayal, while “Her” takes a gentler, nostalgic tone inspired by the music Legend’s father played. “Get Back” pairs soul with prominent horns and strings. On “Are You OK?,” a couple’s argument becomes a mix of sarcasm and empathy. Legend wrote “Bodies On The Floor” with Samm Henshaw while watching the crime drama MobLand; its lyrics use the language of gang conflict to frame two lovers caught in a cycle of hurt and reconciliation. Clipse appear on the track, and the new black-and-white video, directed by Paul Hunter, places Legend at a piano as the story plays out.

Previously released songs “Daylight” and “Fireflies” show other sides of the album, moving from an upbeat love song to reflections on inequality, loss and resilience. Hunter also directed the previously released videos for both songs. Legend’s website has launched The Muse Gallery, an interactive space with themed rooms for music, merchandise and videos, plus a feature where visitors can suggest cities for future performances. Additional rooms are set to open as the album rollout continues.
