The first teaser trailer for The Social Reckoning recently hit the internet, and Jesse Eisenberg’s fans all seem to share the same reaction. Eisenberg famously played Mark Zuckerberg in 2010’s The Social Network, and Succession star Jeremy Strong will play the tech mogul in the upcoming sequel. Although the trailer promises another intense installment, fans of the Zombieland actor have some reservations about the new lead.

Nearly 16 years after The Social Network’s theatrical release, the teaser trailer for its sequel, The Social Reckoning, was released on Wednesday. Among the new faces the film introduces is Jeremy Strong as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Notably, Jesse Eisenberg portrayed the role in the 2010 film. This change in the cast has fans divided.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Okay, I’m here for the plot… but no Jesse Eisenberg is kinda jarring here tbh.”

Meanwhile, a second user said, “Jeremy Strong has some big shoes to fill after how good Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg. Getting Kendall Roy vibes but I like the voice Strong has.”

A third user posted, “Why the f would you recast Jesse Eisenberg?”

Clearly, not all fans are happy with the change. However, it is important to note that this decision was not due to any behind-the-scenes issues. Eisenberg told TODAY, “For reasons that have nothing to do with how amazing that movie will be. Really, truthfully. When you play a character, at some point that you feel maybe you’ve grown into something,” he said.

“It’s a really wonderful movie,” he continued. “I’m friends with Aaron Sorkin, who wrote and is directing this movie. And all of the reasons that I am not in it are completely unrelated to how brilliant it will be.”

Jeremy Strong has an extensive filmography. Apart from playing Kendall Roy in Succession, he has also appeared in films like Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Judge, and The Apprentice, for which he earned his first Oscar nomination.

Furthermore, The Social Reckoning will mark the third collaboration between Strong and Aaron Sorkin, who is directing the sequel. The story is based on the real-life 2021 Facebook whistleblower case involving Frances Haugen, a Facebook engineer who exposed the darkest secrets of the company.

The film’s cast also includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Betty Gilpin, and Bill Burr, among others. It will debut in theaters on October 9, 2026.
