Fox has finally granted a 12-episode straight-to-series order to its upcoming reboot of the classic 1990s lifeguard drama Baywatch. Fremantle and Fox Entertainment have been developing the project since 2024.

“In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status. Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback,” Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn said in a statement. “Together, Fox and Fremantle, along with Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, will bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that make the Baywatch franchise a global sensation.”

What do we know about Fox’s Baywatch reboot?

According to Deadline, the Baywatch reboot will debut during Fox’s 2026-2027 broadcast season. The new iteration is created and executive-produced by Matt Nix (Burn Notice), who has also signed on as the showrunner. The outlet claimed that the creative team is currently considering between Los Angeles and Australia for the show’s filming location. It will also be executive-produced by the original show’s creators, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz, along with Dante Di Loreto.

“The reboot will feature adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry, and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast donning the show’s signature red swimsuits, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline,” reads the new show’s official description.

The original drama starred David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, Parker Stevenson as Craig Pomeroy, Shawn Weatherly as Jill Riley, Billy Warlock as Eddie Kramer, Pamela Anderson as C. J. Parker, Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain, Peter Phelps as Trevor Cole, Jeremy Jackson as Hobie Buchannon, and Holly Gagnier as Gina Pomeroy. It ran on-air for eleven seasons on NBC. Due to its pop cultural success, it spawned a spin-off series, Baywatch Nights, three direct-to-video movies, and a 2017 film adaptation led by Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.
