House of the Dragon season 3 introduced entirely new storylines while removing key book characters from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. These sweeping departures now leave season 4 with significant ground to cover.

Aegon and Aemond’s Invented Reunion

In Fire & Blood, Aemond never attempts to kill Aegon, and the two brothers never reunite after Rook’s Rest. The show instead has Aemond beg for forgiveness, while Aegon spares him and they fight Rhaenyra together. Aegon also never traveled to Harrenhal in the source material.

The Prince That Was Promised Goes Public

The finale featured Rhaenyra telling the people of King’s Landing about the White Walkers’ threat. She also declared herself the “prince that was promised” before the crowd. Condal acknowledged, “It’s not in the book, and it’s not in the history, but there is a bunch of talk about how Rhaenyra became very despotic.”

Nettles Replaced by Rhaena

In Fire & Blood, Sheepstealer’s rider is a lowborn dragonseed named Nettles, not Rhaena Targaryen. Condal stated the decision felt “more apt” because the show is a family story. This change also removes a rumored intimate relationship between Nettles and Daemon.

Helaena’s Pregnancy and Maelor’s Absence

Martin never wrote a pregnancy for Helaena during the Dance of the Dragons. In the books, she already had a younger son, Maelor, whom House of the Dragon cut entirely. The show introduced a new pregnancy to fill that narrative gap instead.

Criston Cole’s Altered Death

The show changed Cole’s death from the book, where three Blackwood archers shoot him. The series consolidated this into a single character, Alysanne Blackwood. The show also reversed the guerrilla warfare dynamic from the books entirely.

The Battle of Tumbleton Reimagined

In the books, Ulf the White betrayed the Blacks alongside Hugh Hammer, not alone. The show also added Daemon and Oscar Tully to the First Battle of Tumbleton. Neither character fought in that engagement in Fire & Blood.

Rhaenyra’s Expanded Role

The show gave Rhaenyra interactions that never occurred in the source material. She never met the High Septon or spoke to Helaena about dragon dreams. In the book, Helaena succumbed to severe depression after her son’s murder. Rhaenyra also never sent assassins to Tumbleton to kill Ormund Hightower.

Season 4 must now reconcile these sweeping changes with the book’s predetermined fates for Aegon, Aemond, and Rhaenyra.
