Heart Wreath for Valentine’s Day

Although I’m not one to go all out for Valentine’s Day, it is always fun to add some color and new decorations to my home in the middle of winter!

Last year I also made an upcycled heart garland with scrap fabric I had at home. I loved how the hearts turned out so much. So this year I made a few more and created this pretty heart wreath with them. Other than the wreath hoop, I had everything at home – my wallet and husband always sigh when I shop my craft room for supplies!

A few touches of pink and hearts here and there are the perfect way to celebrate the season of love! I like to put out my pink painted pine cone roses and give my daughter some sweet treats in these pretty painted clay pots.

How to Make a Pretty Heart Wreath

Paint the surface of the MDF hoop in pink. Set aside to dry.

Sewing the Large Hearts

  1. Cut out the fabric scraps into heart shapes using the large hearts template provided. For added interest, I cut one side in denim fabric and the other side in a colored silk. You could however stick with the same fabric for both sides.cutting large hearts out of scrap fabric
  2. Since the silk was light and flimsy compared with the denim, I added a lightweight fusing to the backside to help stiffen the silk and make it easier to sew with.
  3. With the RIGHT sides of fabric together, sew the heart closed with a ¼” seam allowance from the edge. Continue all the way around leaving a 2” gap opening.sewing large fabric hearts
  4. Trim the seam allowance along the curves and clip at the center of the sewn heart to help maintain the heart shape when turned right side out.trim seam allowance to reduce bulk
  5. Turn the stitched heart right side out. You can insert a pencil into the heart to smooth out the edges.
  6. Lightly fill the heart with polyester batting.fill hearts with polyester badding
  7. Stitch the 2” opening closed by hand with a needle and matching thread color.hand sew seam closed
  8. Repeat to make 9 hearts.

Sewing the Small Hearts

  1. Cut out the fabric scraps into heart shapes using the small heart template provided.denim hearts made out of fabric
  2. With the WRONG sides of fabric together, sew the heart closed with a ¼” seam allowance from the edge. Continue all the way around leaving a 1.5” gap opening.sewng small hearts with wrong sides together
  3. Lightly fill the heart with polyester batting.fill small hearts with batting
  4. Sew the opening closed with the sewing machine.small hearts
  5. Repeat to make 9 hearts.

Assembling the Wreath

  1. Start by laying out the large hearts on the wreath hoop until you are happy with the arrangement.
  2. Next, glue each of the large hearts to the hoop with hot glue.attaching large hearts to hoop wreath
  3. Then, lay out the small hearts over top of the large ones until you are happy with the arrangement. In addition to being decorative, the small hearts help to stabilize the larger ones on the ring.
  4. Glue each of the small hearts onto the larger ones.gluing decorative buttons to wreath
  5. For added interest, add three wooden buttons onto the wreath.attaching wooden button to heart fabric wreath
  6. Finally, tie some twine to the top of the wreath for hanging.
