Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos in Amazon MGM’s upcoming God of War series, tore his bicep while filming a stunt on set. TMZ first reported the injury, noting that it requires surgery and has forced production to pause. The show films in Vancouver and also stars Mandy Patinkin as Odin and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor. No details about the specific stunt that caused the injury have emerged so far.

Producers initially hoped Hurst would return to set by mid-August. However, sources told TMZ that the recovery timeline extends well beyond that target window. The production could now face significant delays stretching into 2027, depending on how long the actor takes to fully heal.

The God of War adaptation has already encountered notable setbacks before this latest injury. In 2024, original showrunner Rafe Judkins departed the project amid creative changes. Amazon MGM then brought on Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, to take over the reins.

The series features a star-studded ensemble cast beyond its three central leads. Ed Skrein plays Baldur, Max Parker takes on Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer portrays Sif. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka round out the supporting cast as beloved dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri. Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the original games, also reprises his fan-favorite role for the live-action show.

Amazon shared a first look at Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus back in February. The series, which will stream exclusively on Prime Video, still has no confirmed release date. Hurst originally voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarok before landing the lead role of Kratos in this ambitious adaptation. Amazon Studios declined to comment on the injury or the revised production schedule.
