From the Publisher:

Mysterious disappearances have tensions running high in Deadwood, South Dakota. In the badlands, Ursula’s Worm Cult prepares a macabre ritual. Sheriff Seth Bullock prepares to lead a combined posse of townsfolk and First Peoples to stop them before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Marshal Bass Reeves is hot on the trail of Jack McCall who is hiding from the ghost of “Wild” Bill Hickok, and Hao T’e Zui’s Righteous Bandits are set to clash with E.B. Farnum and his allies in the Deadwood Miner’s Alliance. Which of these feuds will be paid off in a debt of blood?

This new Doomtown expansion features 4 copies of 56 new cards, including historical people and places of Deadwood! New rules feature Doomtown’s first dual faction dude as well as Headlines that occur during High Noon.

Following the recent Welcome to Deadwood expansion and Doomtown: Weird West Edition, the Doomtown story continues in Deadwood, South Dakota. Debt of Blood is Pine Box Entertainment’s sixth expansion for Doomtown, (previously Doomtown: Reloaded expandable card game) and the first following Weird West Edition. The expansion is compatible with all previous cards.

Review:

Initial Thoughts:

Doomtown is a fairly involved game, but like most games of that level, expansions add to the narrative, add to the gameplay, and add to the depth of game interaction. Debt of Blood is the first expansion I’m trying for Doomtown and am interested to find out if the designers have done a good job of providing additional experiences or have only provided filler content. The expansion consists of cards, but Doomtown is a card driven game, so it makes sense.

The cards introduce 3 rule changes to the game.

Dual Factions: Some of the cards provide Dudes with multiple faction symbols and can act as a member of any of those factions. Prior to this, all Dudes had a single faction to which they belonged.

Headlines: Some of the cards provide Headlines that can take effect during the Noon phase. Prior to this all Headlines took effect during the Shootout phase.

Totems: Some of the cards are Ghost Dancers that can attach Totems to themselves. Prior to this Shamans could only use Totems that were already planted at their location.

There are no game setup changes made with this expansion. The cards may be selected as a part of typical game setup.

Gameplay Changes:

The gameplay changes are mostly described above. Dudes with Dual Factions may play as any of their associated factions at the time that a faction determination must be made. Players have to pay attention to the factions and make sure to make the appropriate determination. Players also have to pay attention to Headlines more, especially if they are to take effect during the Noon phase. Headlines are either Noon phase or Shootout phase; just because you use a Noon Headline doesn’t mean you can’t use a Shootout Headline. Ghost Dancers add a new dimension to Totems. Normally a Totem must be Planted at a location to be used. Ghost Dancers can attach Totems to themselves which can be considered planted at their location under certain circumstances. This means they will have access when they need it rather than having to figure out where / whether a Totem is planted.

This expansion is truly additional content rather than just filler. The changes introduced with these cards modify the gameplay without making the game feel completely different. The cards integrate right into the game and make the game more robust.

What some may find issue with:

Changes to the gameplay aren’t significant, meaning for those who have played Doomtown a bit the changes will require a bit of thought. Remembering to choose a faction or when to play a Headline may take some getting used to so they aren’t missed.

I wasn’t sure an expansion of just cards would make a difference for me; however, the addition of the expansion reenergized the game for me. I felt a little more capable to make choices during the gameplay and did not feel locked in to only what the cards presented. The expansion also added new avenues and challenges for me. I think the expansion is a wonderful addition to Doomtown and would recommend it for anyone who plays the game.

Thomas Shepherd – Reviewer

Grew up loving to solve puzzles, play games.  In younger years he had fun playing pencil games, playing D&D with friends, and hanging out with others. His favorite thing to do was to make puzzles, mazes, word games, picture games, etc. Sadly his career took him in a different direction. Gaming came back into his life, though, about 15 years ago & held onto it since. He enjoys designing games and has 9 published titles, through, Toresh Games. Sadly he wasn’t able to sustain the company. He would love to see a return to games as the best social media platform for the masses.
